The Mill at Anselma
The Millers' Forum

The idea for the Millers’ Forum originated from conversations with Stephen J. Kindig, the respected molinologist who advised the Mill Trust throughout Anselma’s restoration. He encouraged us to better understand milling and to find ways to learn and pass on this craft. The Mill Trust brought together a team of consultants to broaden the Mill’s historical scholarship and explore the use of various interpretive methods including exhibit signage, hands-on activities, and new technologies. As we talked to Stephen Kindig and other seasoned millers, we grew increasingly aware of the need to bring millers together. The Millers’ Forum has become an important opportunity for miller to come together to share their experiences in milling, interpretive programs, and historic site best practices.

On July 10, 2006, the Millers’ Forum met for the first time, bringing together millers from as far away as North Carolina, Massachusetts and Michigan. Eight historic mill sites were represented. Historian Brooke Hunter of Rider University shared her fascinating study of milling in the Mid-Atlantic region, and there was a lively discussion about how different historic mill sites approached interpretation. The initial Forum was funded through a grant from The Pew Charitable Trusts’ Heritage Philadelphia Program.

Since the inaugural Forum in 2006, the Millers’ Forum has been hosted by Pete Curtis at Philipsburg Manor, and by Sarah Bent at Historic Walnford. In 2009, the Mill Trust welcomed the Miller's Forum back to Anselma. This year it will be held on Tuesday, July 13th at historic Cooper Grist Mill in New Jersey. The Millers’ Forum is geared toward historic site millers. If you are interested in attending this year, please contact Jennifer L. Green at 610-827-1906 or at jenngreen@anselmamill.org.
