The Miller’s House

John Oberholtzer operated the mill until the winter of 1871, when he was seriously injured while trying to free the ice-bound water wheel. John hired miller Levi King to continue running the mill and built the Miller’s House in 1873 to house mill workers. It was occupied by subsequent millers and their families over the next 100 years.

The last miller to live in the Miller’s House was Oliver Ernest Collins (“Ernie” to his friends) who moved into the house in 1919 and lived there until his death in 1982. During his lifetime the house went through extensive changes and modifications.

The Mill at Anselma Preservation and Educational Trust restored the interior and exterior of the house between 2002 and 2004 to bring it back to its original appearance. The first floor is open to visitors and includes the recreated post office operated by the Collins. The second floor houses the offices of the Mill staff.
